We celebrated LWS with the following activities and events: BSL lessons for pupils (intro to new language), S1 led the Rosary in French in our Oratory, S1 “Languages Live” mini disco with French, Spanish and Italian music and Mass with French & Spanish prayers of intercession by BGE pupils. Spanish local day out: Picture Hoose in Gourock, with Argentinian guest speaker (Clarisa Boswell) for talking practice, cinema screening of ‘Sorda’ a Spanish film about a deaf woman who navigates motherhood and deafness in Spanish society. Finishing with lunch from Gianni’s pizzeria and a question & answer session about languages, Argentina and culture/ traditions. Second day out: French local day out, Picture Hoose, French cinema screening, ‘la Rafle’ a French historical war drama.

Clyde, the owner of the Picture Hoose could not have been more welcoming and accommodating to our needs. We found the Picture Hoose to be a wonderfully adaptable space to host our language sessions with Argentinian guest speaker, followed by a Spanish cinema screening. Clarisa was excited to work with our pupils and encouraged them to speak in Spanish as much as possible. This was a great opportunity to spark curiosity and build confidence, allowing pupils to experience languages in a really engaging and meaningful way.

Also, thanks to Gianni’s pizzeria for providing lunch and an opportunity to practise some Italian and chat about Italian life and culture!

Languages Week is all about showing our young people that languages are living, fun, and part of everyday life, connecting them to different cultures and communities. Thank you, Greenock Telegraph (George & Susan) for showcasing our events and being a part of this with us!

In Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Sandrine Bache celebrated Languages Week Scotland in the most creative way by launching a fun French competition across her classes. Children were invited to create their very own imaginary French postcard titled Ma carte postale imaginaire! Pupils imagined they were on holiday in France or another French-speaking country.

Sandrine says, “Through this competition, I hope to highlight the importance of language learning and the role it plays in keeping languages alive for future generations. I also want children to see that learning a language can be fun and creative, to spark their curiosity about other cultures, and to give them confidence to express themselves in French in new and imaginative ways.”

The winner was Charley, aged 9, who chose to send her postcard all the way from French-speaking Quebec in Canada!

Over in Livingston, French teacher Sandra Kasparek continues to provide vital support to local children through her online French classes, helping to build confidence, fluency, and a genuine love of languages that extends well beyond the classroom.

“I’m proud to help my pupils get a head start in French and see their confidence grow,” says Sandra. “Languages Week Scotland is the perfect time to celebrate how learning another language can open doors, connect people, and create opportunities. This week, we’re having extra fun activities — from French storytelling and themed games to songs, quizzes, and cultural explorations — so pupils can really experience the joy of language learning. Seeing my pupils embrace French with enthusiasm is incredibly rewarding.”

Parents have also seen the impact first-hand. Joanna Park, mum of Amelia (11) and Lilia (7), says:

“We are so grateful for the wonderful progress our girls have made in French. It is clear that Sandra is not only an excellent teacher but also someone who knows how to make learning engaging and enjoyable for children. Sandra’s patience, passion, and dedication have made a huge difference.”

Pupil Sadie, aged 12, adds:

“I really enjoy learning French because it helps me learn new things and gives me a free pass in my exams at secondary school! It’s also great for connecting with others, especially when travelling to French-speaking countries.”

At Dalkeith High School we had a very exciting week. We completed the daily challenges in language lessons – see attached. We also launched our Language Leaders award, opened applications for Japanese taster classes and ran a school-wide Duolingo competition. We saw it as a great opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of learning languages and to celebrate our diverse community.

St Patrick’s Primary School, Troon proudly celebrated Languages Week Scotland with a vibrant and engaging ‘All Around the World’ afternoon, bringing the whole school together to explore languages, cultures and traditions from across the globe.

Pupils from every stage took part in the event, with each pupil choosing a country to “visit” through a range of creative, interactive activities. The afternoon provided a valuable opportunity for children to develop an understanding of different cultures while building enthusiasm and confidence in learning languages.

Classes travelling to Canada explored Indigenous culture by creating traditional wigwams, learning about their purpose and significance. Pupils visiting China enjoyed discovering elements of Chinese culture and food, tasting items such as seaweed and fortune cookies while discussing traditions and symbols associated with the country.

Those visiting Switzerland produced striking artwork inspired by the iconic Matterhorn, using a variety of materials and techniques. In Spain, pupils learned how to say and recognise colours in Spanish, practising their pronunciation and using the language in a fun and practical way. Pupils exploring Italy developed their Italian vocabulary by playing bingo, while classes visiting Vietnam created colourful lanterns, inspired by traditional Vietnamese festivals.

The ‘All Around the World’ afternoon encouraged curiosity, creativity and respect for diversity. Pupils were fully engaged throughout the event and enjoyed sharing their learning with others across the school.

Languages Week Scotland was a wonderful celebration of global citizenship at St Patrick’s Primary, helping pupils to recognise the value of languages and the importance of understanding the wider world.
